We're excited to announce that Hutton Parsons was selected as this year's recipient for the NCBA 2025 Scholarship sponsored by Barron & Newburger Foundation. Hutton is a 2nd year law student at the Oklahoma City University School of Law, and he graciously approved of us sharing his winning essay on this year's topic: The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has been a key regulator of the financial services industry, including debt collection, since its inception in the 2010 Dodd–Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. Recent legal challenges and administrative actions have sought to limit the CFPB’s authority, raising questions about its future role in financial regulation. How do these changes, and/or the threat of changes, impact the debt collection industry? Are they ultimately beneficial or harmful, and why?
We greatly appreciate our judges—Crystal Duplay, Rachel VanHorn, Barb Nilsen, Ellie Tami and David Weimer—for the time and care they spent on evaluating the submissions.
We also want to extend gratitude to Barron & Newburger Foundation for generously sponsoring the scholarship.
